Every stage sits in a layer. A value stream needs at least one layer before it can have stages. Add more when different groups work through their own stages side by side, such as Product and Engineering in a feature delivery value stream.
Add a layer
- Turn on edit mode with Edit map.
- Choose Add a layer at the foot of the value stream.
- Type its name in Name and choose Add layer.
The new layer goes below the others, with a slot to add its first stage.
Rename a layer
In edit mode, double-click the layer's name, which runs up the left side of the value stream. Type the new name and press Enter.
Remove a layer
- In edit mode, click the layer's name to select it.
- Press Delete.
A layer that still has stages is not removed, and the map says "Move or delete the stages in this layer first." Remove its stages first. Add a stage and write up its details explains how to remove a stage.
A stage cannot move to another layer. To move one, add a stage with the same name in the other layer, move its practices across, and remove the old stage.
