Not every practice belongs to one stage. VSTA has two places for the others.

  • A band runs alongside some of a layer's stages, from one stage to a later one. Use it for work that goes on while those stages happen, such as keeping up with a tax authority's changes while features are built.
  • A row that runs through every stage sits at the foot of the value stream. Use it for practices that happen throughout, such as a team's stand-up. A value stream can have several of these rows, each with a group name such as "Team rhythm".

Add a band

  1. Turn on edit mode with Edit map, and open the details of the stage the band starts at.
  2. Under Add a band alongside, type the Band name and, if you like, a Description.
  3. In From this stage to, choose the stage the band ends at. Only later stages in the same layer are offered. A stage with no later stage says so.
  4. Choose Add band.

The band appears under its stages. Add practices to it from the slot in its top right corner at level 3 or closer.

A band's name, description and stages cannot be changed once it is made. To change them, move its practices out, remove the band, and add it again.

Remove a band

Open the band's details with Details and choose Remove band, or select the band in edit mode and press Delete. A band that still holds practices is not removed. Move its practices somewhere else first.

Put a practice in a row that runs through every stage

A row exists once a practice is in it. To start a new row:

  1. Add the practice to any stage, then open it.
  2. Under Where it sits, in Move, choose Runs through every stage in Place in.
  3. Type the row's name in Group (only for every stage), such as "Team rhythm". Leave it empty for a row with no name.
  4. Choose Move.

Once a row exists, add more practices to it from the slot in its top right corner at level 3 or closer. A row disappears when its last practice leaves it.
