VSTA Help

Editing the map

Add and change value streams, layers, stages, practices and relations on the map, and see what has changed.

  1. Turn on edit mode

Edit map turns on edit mode, which shows where you can add things and lets you rename, move and delete on the map.

  2. Add, rename, resize or delete a value stream

Add a value stream from the slot below the others, give it a description, change its size, and delete it with everything in it.

  3. Add, rename or remove a layer

Layers split a value stream into rows, each with its own stages, such as Product and Engineering.

  4. Add a stage and write up its details

Add a stage at the end of a layer, write what it is for and when work moves on, mark it as a gate, and remove it.

  5. Move stages, run them alongside each other, and resize them

Drag a stage along its layer to change the order, drop it under another so the two run at the same time, and make a stage bigger.

  6. Bands alongside stages, and rows that run through every stage

Add a band for work that runs alongside some stages, and put practices in a row that runs through the whole value stream.

  7. Add a practice and write up its record

Add a practice to a stage, then fill in its text, kind, family, teams, what it uses and who decides.

  8. Move, copy or delete a practice

Move a practice to another stage, copy it so each copy can change on its own, take it out of one of the places it sits, or delete it.

  9. Arrange the cards in a stage

Drag practice cards anywhere inside their stage, the way you would arrange cards on a wall, and VSTA keeps the layout.

  10. Draw, change or remove a relation

Draw a line from one practice to another and pick the relation, or add, change and remove relations in a practice's record.

  11. Teams, functions, shared items and kinds

Add and rename teams and functions on the Manage page, rename and describe tools, roles and other shared items, and know where kinds of practice come from.

  12. When VSTA warns about unsaved changes

What the "You have changes you haven't saved" bar means, and how to keep or discard what you typed.

  13. See what has changed

The Changes page lists every change to a client's map, newest first, with who made it and when.
