Each relation between two practices records how you know about it:
- stated means someone said so, in an interview, a workshop or a document;
- inferred means it was worked out, by you or by Claude, from what people said, and nobody said it in so many words.
The mark helps you decide which relations to check with the people who do the work before you rely on them.
Who sees it
Facilitators and editors see the mark beside each relation in a practice's record, and can change it. Readers never see it. To a reader, every relation looks the same, on the map and in the record.

Set it
- A relation drawn on the map, from one card to another, is always stated. Change it in the record afterwards if you need to.
- A relation added in a practice's record takes the choice in How we know.
- To change it, open either practice, choose Change or remove under the relation, choose stated or inferred in How we know, and choose Save relation.
Draw, change or remove a relation explains these steps in full.
Relations from Claude
When Claude adds relations, through an import or a change you ask for, it marks each one stated if the source says so, and inferred if Claude worked it out. Check the inferred ones with the people who do the work, and change the mark to stated once they confirm it.
VSTA does not yet keep the quotes or interviews behind a relation or a practice. Keep those in your own notes.
